Free Business Software
Free Open Source Software is available for most, if not all business functions.
In most cases, this software is as good or better than commercial software. The software is broken down into the following two general types:
- Desktop Software -- Software that runs on the desktop. Unless stated otherwise, software listed will run on Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.
- Web Server Software -- Software runs on a web server. The web server can be your online server. However, all modern computers are capable of running a web server in the background allowing the program to appear to be running on the desktop (this may require some technical assistance).
Desktop Software
OpenOffice
A free replacement for Microsoft Word. This suite of applications includes a word processor, a spreadsheet and presentation applications. It can also read and write all Microsoft Word and Excel formats.
AVGGreat free virus protection and scanner for Windows operating system. It can be set up to scan your hard drive regularly and download updates when you start up your computer. No technical support available with the free version.
Server Software
WAMP
Windows software (doesn't work on Windows 98 or Me) that allows you to run Apache web server and mySQL database server on your desktop computer. Requires a moderate level of computer knowledge to install.
